A sequence of throwing-catching challenges for pairs of players. 15-minute coordination training.
Supplies
- 1 disc per person
- If working with younger kids, use softer/lighter “catch” discs, or perhaps something like a “Glitch”. Older and more experienced kids can use normal disc golf putters.
Preparations
- Make pairs. Each player has 1 disc.
The Rules
- Players complete a series of 2-disc throw-catch variations with their partner, switching to a new variation when the coach indicates. The coach has the pairs complete a series of interesting/challenging throw/catch variations from the ideas below.
Two catches
- Both players stand opposite of each other 1 m apart.
- One player throws both discs stacked vertically up about 1 m in the air, the other player shall catch them both, one in each hand.
Alternative: Both players stand opposite of each other 2-3m apart. Players throw (or putt) both discs stacked, ideally with high rotation, very little push– the discs should separate from each other during flight, again the other player shall catch them both, each with one hand, vice versa.
To and fro
- Both players stand opposite of each other 3 to 4 m apart, each one with a disc in their hands.
- They throw at the same time and catch at the same time.
- When they are both right-handed and throw backhands, the discs will not collide too often.
- Discs of varying colors help with variant 3.
- Alternative: Both players throw the forehand/flick (a bit further apart). Or both players throw any throw they like.
- Alternative: Both players have to clap once/twice/three times, after releasing their disc and before catching the other one (from a bit further apart)
Up and under
- Both players stand opposite of each other 3 to 4 m apart, each one with a disc of different colour in their hands.
- They throw at the same time and catch at the same time.
- The disc with one colour (i.e. white) is always thrown higher, the other disc with another colour (i.e. blue) is always thrown lower.
- No matter what kind of throws the players choose, the discs will never collide.
- Alternative: one player always throws higher, the otherplayer alwas throws lower. After ten passes, switch.
Up – catch-release – catch
- High difficulty drill. Both players stand opposite of each other 1 m apart, each one with a disc in their hands.
- One player throws a disc vertically up in the air.
- The other one throws to this player.
- He or she catches and returns it immediately (and controlled), only then he or she catches his own disc. Change.
Double throws, double catches
- Both players stand opposite of each other 3 to 4 m apart, one with a disc in each hand.
- He or she throws two backhands at the same time and the other one catches both discs at the same time.
- How many dropless rounds in a row can you get?
- Alternative: The player with the two discs throws two backands that cross flight and the other one catches both discs at the same time.
- Alternative: The player with the two discs throws two forehands/flicks and the other one catches both discs at the same time.
- Alternative: The player with the two discs throws two forehands/flicks that cross flight and the other one catches both discs at the same time.
