Card Shark

Throwing is obvious at a disc golf training. But what do you do with a deck of cards? This warm-up game gets kids moving and throwing, and combines elements of skill and chance.

Supplies

  • One deck of cards
  • One badminton shuttle or some other throwable object that does not fly very far per team (cheap option: newspaper crumpled up and stuffed into small plastic bags, which are then tied off)

Preparations

  1. Mark the playing area, with a starting line and a line to move beyond before returning (typically around 20m apart).
  2. Divide the group into teams of 2-3 people.
  3. Give each team a shuttlecock/throwing item.

Rules

  • The shuttle must be thrown from one end of the field to the other and back. The team must alternate the thrower for each throw.
  • After each round (down and back), the team receives a random playing card from the instructor’s deck.
  • The team may have a maximum of 4 cards “in hand”.
  • When a team has collected 4 cards, it can exchange one card after each additional round.
  • The team with the highest sum of cards at the end of the game wins the game (2=2, 10=10, Jack=11, Queen=12, etc.)
  • Do not put the cards given for exchange back into the deck. Otherwise the next team has a higher probability of getting a small card.
  • Usually, the right moment to end the game round is after a couple of exchange rounds.

Variations

  • The game can also be played with a disc, using the rules of Ultimate: you may not walk with the disc in your hand, and you must catch each throw to advance
